Charles Rouse has been painting in watercolor for more than 40 years.
Today, Charles is dedicated to continually refining his craft, experimenting with new techniques to create atmospheric watercolor paintings that blend observation with imagination. Inspired by his travels and photography, his work captures not only the places he visits but the emotion and essence of each moment.
Biography
Born in Detroit, Michigan, Charles Rouse is an award-winning watercolor artist based in Fallbrook, California. With more than forty years of experience, he has built a distinguished career creating transparent watercolor paintings inspired by travel, photography, and the beauty of everyday life. Before pursuing painting full time, Charles worked as a commercial designer and illustrator and spent 25 years as a college art instructor, combining technical expertise with a lifelong passion for fine art.
Artistic Approach
Charles specializes in traditional transparent watercolor, using only paper, water, and pigment to create expressive, atmospheric works. Rather than painting en plein air, he travels extensively, photographing scenes that later become references in the studio. His work is driven by color, light, drama, storytelling, and the unique character of each subject, inviting viewers to discover their own meaning within every painting.

Throughout his career, Charles has exhibited in many of the nation's premier watercolor exhibitions and has received numerous awards for his work.
